At least once a week Ryan and I have a date night. Nothing fancy – usually just dinner together at a local restaurant.
Tonight was different though. Dinner was much more relaxed – so relaxed in fact that my hair was still dripping wet.
You see, our date night this week started at the pool!
Ryan has never enjoyed the water – but he’s learning how to swim! His first lesson was on Tuesday (I use the term “lesson” loosely because I was the one “teaching” him.)
His goal is to complete a Sprint Triathlon this spring, so he’s just getting his feet wet (pun intended) now: learning the freestyle stroke, and getting used having his face in the water.
While Ryan was practicing his stroke and breathing I got in a short 800 yard ladder swim.

It was a really nice workout & it I felt pretty strong in the water, playing around with my stroke and breathing pattern.
After our swim we went straight to Jersey Mike’s for sandwiches and chips (with wet hair).
It was a super evening – I’m so proud of Ryan for wanting to learn to swim (and eventually complete his first triathlon), and it’s fun watching him make progress in the water!
WHAT ABOUT YOU: Do you have “date night” with your significant other? Have you ever tried teaching someone a new sport/activity?
How fun! So great that he’s going to train for a sprint tri, you’ll be spending lots of bike rides together soon too!
That’s so awesome that you’re teaching your husband to swim!
Quick question about your pool workout – and this is probably the dumbest question but I’m just getting into the swimming thing – what do you do between sets? Like on your ladder between the 25 and 50 do you just take a little breather? I have one workout which is 100 swim/100 kick haha. This workout looks fun but I am not up to swimming 800 straight yet!
I definitely take little breaks! Usually anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds depending on how motivated I feel. Endurance in the water is definitely still a big struggle for me – I can still only make it about 200-250 yards before I need to take either a break or switch strokes and catch my breath.
What a great idea. We have a standing date night, but it usually involves eating and drinking. I love the idea of making it into an active time spent together.
Thanks for motivating me to make a change!
