A Nice Surprise

13 Oct, 2011

Tonight I came home with one goal: Get in one last brick workout before it gets dark.

And then I saw this as I walked into the bedroom to change into my workout clothes:

Um…is that a BOX with a BOW on it??  You betcha!

Upon closer inspection I realized it was a BOX with a BOW and MY NAME on it!

Now don’t get too excited – it’s not my birthday yet – but Diggity and I have a problem with waiting to give gifts…

So I was momentarily distracted & tore into that box like a little kid on Christmas.  And then I may or may not have squealed and jumped up and down like a teenage girl at a Justin Beiber concert.

And then I hauled ass out the door for my last brick workout before Longleaf: 15 minutes in the saddle followed by a 1.5 mile run.

Did I get the workout in before it got dark?  Not so much. I got back to the house after riding just as the sun was setting – and it pretty much looked like this when I got back from the run:

(Ok, that’s an exaggeration – I took that picture at 9pm…it was only 7:45 when I finished up.)

So how’d the workout go?  It was GREAT!  My legs felt strong, my breathing was good, and I was moving pretty quickly feeling like I was overdoing it.

On the bike I got in 3.97 miles in just over 16 min – average speed of 14.7mph which isn’t too bad once you factor in all of the stop signs and red lights I had to stop at roll through.

Brick Bike Speed

The run was fabulous: 1.46 miles in 16:33.  That’s an 11:21 pace baby – and it INCLUDES three 1:30 walk breaks (which is what I’ll be doing on race day).

Brick-Run

Apparently my legs were really warmed up after that short ride!  What a nice surprise!

You know what else was a nice surprise?  The effing TRANSITION BAG that came out of that box I found on my bed!

Sometimes it pays to open presents early!  Now if you’ll excuse me…I’m going to go see how much gear I can cram into that bag – I can’t wait to use it on Sunday!

It was really hard for me to swallow going back to run/walk intervals – but it’s SO much easier mentally for me & after realizing that it really doesn’t slow me down that much overall, I am confident it was the right decision. Hope you have a great time tomorrow!
